John Drier served in the American consulate service in half a dozen countries, including being vice consul at Singapore in 1910. John's wife Katherine McNider, of Monpelier, Vt. went as a young woman to Dresden Germany to study music and while there she was married in 1889 to Baron John Von Rosenberg. When he died in 1911, he bequeathed his widow Bonnewitz castle at Pirna, Saxony. In 1913, Katherine married again to John Dreier who was then in the American consular service in Dresen. When the war broke out they were forced to leave the country with the other Americans and this castle and it's lands were seized by the Germans. Katherine tried to sue the German government in 1935, but was denied permission to do so.
John Drier was also organizer of the foreign exchange department of the American Express Company.

WAR EXPERIENCES OF LOCAL MAN WERE QUITE THRILLING

C. L. Dreier Returns To Washington After Having Visited In Many of The Warring Counties

One Muscatine man has encountered war experiences in more countries likely than any other figure in the U. S. consular service. He is C. L. Dreier, a brother of H. E. Dreier, who was advertising agent for the Journal for some years. Special correspondence from Washington set forth his experience as follows:

C. L. Dreier, a Davenport man in the United States consular service is in Washington on leave of absence after going through some thrilling experiences in the European war zone.

Few American officials abroad have been in position to see more of the varied war activities than Mr. Dreier. He was in Germany, Belgium and Russia during the most stirring times those countries have witnessed.

Mr. Dreier was in Dresden during the early part of the war. Later his duties took him well over Europe. He was in Ghent, Belgium, the headquarters of the fourth army corps where the Germans had 200,000 troops stationed. He was in another post in Belgium where the Germans had 200,000 troops stationed. He was in another post in Belgium when the Germans made three bombing raids on the town, one bomb falling in his back yard.

One of the interesting experiences Mr. Dreier had was in Russia at the outbreak of the Revolution. He was in Petrograd when the street fighting was the most serious and narrowly escaped injury from fighting of street mobs.

While in Washington on leave of absence waiting reassignment to duty Mr. Dreier is preparing to go to Texas for a short visit to his family, now temporarily resident there. He will probably be assigned to a consular post on the American continent on his return.
