He graduated from Harvard College in 1806, and was appointed County Attorney for York in 1811. In 1814, he was appointed U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine by President Madison and served until 1820.
He married Nancy Gale Tucker around 1813, and one of their daughter's, Marianne Preble, married Stephen Longfellow, the eldest brother of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Their other children were: William, died at age 2, Nancy Tucker, who married Capt. Robert Allen and William Pitt, Jr., who married Harriet M.T. Mussey.
He and his family moved to Portland where he was the city's representative to Maine's 1819 Constitutional Convention. When Maine was admitted to the Union, he was appointed to the Supreme Judicial Court on which he served until he resigned in 1828.
In 1828, President Jackson appointed him Minister to The Hague to represent the U.S. in its dispute with England over the Northeastern boundary. The Hon. William Pitt Preble was known for his oral presentations in legal matters, rarely equaled and never surpassed. A Trustee of the Bowdoin College, he was bestowed the honorary degree, LLD. He was also first president of the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad Co. in 1847.
On May 10, 1852, at the age of 68, widower William Pitt Preble married Sarah Ann Forsaith, age 37. They had one son, Edward Preble.
One of the most prominent and influential politicians of the State of Maine, he died in 1857, age 74.
