Second lieutenant and first lieutenant, 12th United States Infantry and first lieutenant, 1st United States Artillery. Aide-de-Camp on staff of General John Schofield. Resigned from service, June 18, and honorably discharged, June 28, 1872. He engaged in raising stock and mining in California. Rathbone was appointed United States Consul General of Paris, France by President Grover Clevelend, May 18, 1887, a position he held for four years. He was decorated by the French government, "as officer of the Legion of Honor", for outstanding service to France. He volunteered his services to the United States during the Spanish American War and served with General Merritt, Lesley, Merriam and Otis. His father was the first elected mayor of Albany, New York. His brother Henry, attempted to subdue John Wilkes Booth, after he had shot President Abraham Lincoln. Holy Cross Cemetery confirms that Rathbone is buried there, however there is no inscription on the unusual gravestone.
