Son of George Thacher and Sarah Savage

Partly fitted for college by Joseph Adams (Harvard College, 1805), who was a private tutor in his father's family; and completed his preparatory studies at the Gorham Academy under the instruction of Rev. Reuben Nason (Harvard College, 1802). He graduated at Harvard in 1812, and studied law with Hon. Cyrus King in Saco, ME. He practiced in Saco from 1815 to 1835, a part of the time as a senior partner of Governor Fairfield in law-business, and was register of probate of York county for several years. In 1835 he moved to Monroe, where he remained until 1841, when he was appointed collector of Belfast. At the expiration of his commission he returned to Monroe where he resumed business; and continued there until 1853 when he removed to Westford, MA.

Mr Thacher was a gentleman of most pleasing address, and distinguished for his generous qualities. He had a deep sense of the importance of truth and justice, and discharged every trust and every duty with conscientious integrity. Believing the truth and importance of Christian religion, he was a firm supporter of public worship, a communicant and constant attendant on the ordinances of the gospel.
