John Henry Jackson, M.D., son of Horatio Nelson Jackson, was born in Brome, Province of Quebec, on April 19, 1844. He was educated in the public schools, attended Barre Academy, and graduated in 1862. He entered the medical department of the University of Vermont and received the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1865. He undertook post-graduate study at McGill University in Montreal during 1868 and 1869. In recognition of his medical achievements, the University of Vermont conferred upon him the honorary degree of Master of Arts in 1882.
Dr. Jackson began medical practice in Stockholm, St. Lawrence County, New York, in 1865. After three years he relocated to Montpelier, Vermont, where he practiced for a year, and then settled permanently in Barre, Vermont, on December 30, 1870. He continued in general practice there until his death in 1907. His early years in Barre presented challenges for a young physician, but through professional skill and dedicated service he attained the leading medical practice in the town.
His professional career included extensive service to the University of Vermont. In 1882 he was appointed Professor of Physiology and occupied that chair for twenty-five years. In 1890 he served as a delegate to the British Medical Association and to the Medical Congress at Berlin. He was a member and president of both county and state medical societies and a member of the American Medical Association. His professional affiliation was allopathic.
Dr. Jackson also played a prominent role in civic affairs. He served as representative of Barre in the Vermont Legislature in 1878 and 1879. In 1896 he was the Democratic candidate for governor. He was elected mayor of Barre in 1903. He was a director of the Barre Savings Bank and Trust Company from its incorporation and became its president in 1903. In politics he was a Democrat.
He was deeply committed to the Congregational Church. Having joined the Congregational church of Brome in youth, he became an active member of the Barre congregation on moving there. He served as superintendent of the Sunday school from 1873 to 1875 and participated for many years in the executive committee. He was a principal figure in the extensive remodeling of the church completed between 1885 and 1887, and was later a deacon, supporting the church generously.
Education and community improvement occupied much of his attention. He served as superintendent of public schools in 1881 and 1882. For many years he was a trustee and treasurer of Barre Academy. He led successful efforts to erect the monument in Barre Cemetery honoring Dr. and Mrs. Spaulding, securing contributions from former students.
Dr. Jackson was active in several fraternal and benevolent organizations. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Clan Gordon of the Order of Scottish Clans, and held high distinction in Masonic circles throughout New England. He served as master of Granite Lodge and as district deputy for five years. On September 18, 1888, at the annual session of the Supreme Council in Boston, he received the thirty-third and last degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, and was enrolled as an honorary member of the Supreme Council for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction.
Dr. Jackson married Anna Dutton Wells of Brasher Falls, New York, on June 24, 1867. She died November 29, 1868. On December 24, 1869, he married Cora A. Wood, who survived him.
Dr. John Henry Jackson died in Barre, Vermont, on September 13, 1907, from complications of surgery for appendicitis. At the time of his death, he remained a leading figure in the medical, civic, educational, and religious life of his community.
