Arthur J. Sills, 65, former attorney general
Metuchen – Former state Attorney General Attorney Arthur J. Sills, 65, of Dellwood Road died yesterday in Perth Amboy General Hospital. Mr. Sills served two terms as attorney general of New Jersey, from 1962 to 1970. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Perth Amboy before moving here 27 years ago. A polio victim at age 4, Mr. Sills subsequently became acquainted with former President Franklin D. Roosevelt when both men received treatments in Warm Springs, Ga. He received his bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in 1938 and in 1941 earned his law degree from Harvard University.
He was the recipient of a doctorate of law degree from Rutgers and a doctor of letters degree from Newark State College. Other honors included the Kirkpatrick Scholarship at Harvard Law School and Phi Beta Kappa at Rutgers. He was the recipient of the Louis Bronlow Memorial Prize and the Pope Paul VI Humanitarian Award.
Following his graduation from Harvard, Mr. Sills was a private practitioner specializing in corporate trust and estate and contract matters. He was with the law firm of Wilentz, Goldman, Spitzer and Sills prior to becoming senior partner with Sills, Beck, Cummis, Zuckerman, Radin & Tischman, P.A. of Newark. He is listed in Who's Who in America.
In 1964 Mr. Sills was appointed by United States Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy to the executive board of the National Conference on Bail and Criminal Justice. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the New Jersey Bar Association, the Middlesex County Bar Association, the Perth Amboy Bar Association, and the by American Judicature Society. He served as president of the National Association of Attorneys General from 1968 to 1970.
Former chairman of the State Enforcement Planning Agency, the New Jersey Police Training Commission, and the Governor's Interdepartmental Committee on Equal Opportunity, he also served on the board of directors for WHYY-TV, WNDT-TV, PPD Corporation, City Title Insurance Co., Channel Companies, Inc., Development Corporation of American, and J.F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison.
He was formerly national commissioner for the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, where he was named honorary president. He was a board member with the New Jersey Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. He was a member of Temple Neve Shalom in Metuchen and Congregation Shaarey Tefiloh in Perth Amboy.
Surviving are his wife, Mina Minzer Sills, a daughter, Hedy Bush of North Haven, Conn., his mother, Ida Rosensweig Silverman of Perth Amboy, a sister, Sylvia Oettle of Woodbridge, and two grandchildren. Services will be conducted 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Congregation Shaarey Tefiloh, Market Street, Perth Amboy, with Rabbi Simon Feld and Rabbi Albert Schwartz officiating. Shiva will be at the family residence, 204 Dellwood Road. Burial will be in Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge.
