Having fled Germany during the German Revolution in 1848 with his parents , George Christian and Charlotte D Stuhidreher Thilenius , they immigrated to America settling in St. Louis, He married Margarethe Fronmann in St. Louis Mo on March 8 1857 ,they came to Cape Girardeau Mo around the same time.As with many Germans, George was pro union, anti slavery before the Civil War. When General Grant ordered Forts A B C and D to be built in Cape Girardeau George was put in charge of building them. He organized the Cape Girardeau Missouri Home Guard and served as Lt Col in the 56th E M M and seen action at Reeves Mill and Buckskull in Randolph Co Arkansas,along with the 2nd State Militia and Captain Adolph Tacke's E M M. He also served in Capt Nathaniel Lyons Forces and seen action at Camp Jackson.He helped save St Louis from the Southern Forces.
He was a Delegate to the Drake Convention in 1865 and signed the ordinance abolishing slavery in Missouri( his signature can be seen on the document at the National Archives website)
He helped bring the 1st public elementary school to Cape Girardeau and also the state college.
He was a Rep. to the Missouri General Assembly and Mayor of Cape Girardeau 1868-1873
