daughter of the late Leonardo and Saveria D'Apice of Meriden.
Mary was a graduate of Meriden High School. She graduated from Stone College in New Haven with an Associate Degree in Commercial Science. After graduating from college, she accepted a position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Security Administration, in New Haven.
After three years the office moved to Washington, D.C. where she continued in this position. When she was living in Washington she also worked at the Bureau of Agricultural Economics as secretary to the chief accountant and for U.S. Senator Maloney of Meriden. Later, she transferred to the Social Security Administration Office in Meriden.
Prior to her marriage, Mary worked at a branch of the U.S. Navy Department in Hartford.
After she was married, Mary gave unselfishly of her time and talents to many community and civic ventures. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and served as grand regent, vice grand regent, charities chairman, trustee, legislative chairman and state chairman. She was a member of St. Theresa's Guild and also served as legislative chairman. In addition, she had been a member of the Middlesex Council of Catholic Women for 17 years, serving as legislative chairman and corresponding secretary.
In the 1950's, Mary was involved with the Community Chest (now United Way) having served as vice chairman, captain, and canvasser and vice president of the United Fund Board. She was instrumental in organizing the first Middlesex Civic Music Association and served on its executive board. Mary served on many fund raising drives for the YMCA , Red Cross and the Middlesex Hospital. She was one of the first organizers of the Cerebral Palsy Association of Middletown. Mary and her husband enjoyed passing the hat for this charity at many New Year's Eve celebrations.
Mary was a member of the Middletown District Nurse Association board of directors. She spent numerous hours helping the Sisters of Our Lady of the Cenacle at the Wadsworth Mansion in promoting and raising money for them to carry out their retreat work, in the capacity of state chairman, patron and benefactor chairman. She has been a volunteer at the hospital for well over 45 years and had accumulated 5,570 hours of service. Those hours were served in the gift shop, thrift shop, reception desk, and visiting patients. She especially enjoyed knitting baby caps and mitts for the newborns in the maternity ward. Mary also had the honor of being appointed a corporator of the Middlesex Hospital. In 1967, she was named Outstanding Women of the Year by the B'Nai B'rith chapter.
She also held various positions in the following organizations: secretary of the Long Lane Auxiliary, secretary and vice president of the Middletown Women's Republican Club and a docent at the Middlesex Historical Society.
