Retired Jurist,
Dies At Falls
NIAGARA FALLS — Stricken
with a heart attack Friday afternoon
at his home, Fred M. Ackerson,
90, of 4207 McKoon Ave., for-
mer presiding justice of the New
York State Court of Claims, died
a short time later in Memorial
Hospital.
He was appointed to the Court
of Claims in 1915 by former Gov.
Charles S. Whitman and became
presiding judge 13 months later.
After his retirement in 1937 he
served as acting judge and referee
for three more years.
Born in Somerset, Niagara
County, June 6, 1866, he was the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F.
Ackerson.
After attending Yates Academy
in Orleans County, he served as
teacher and principal of the Somerset
district school in 1887 and
1888.
The following year he was grad
uated from Brockport Normal
School. He entered the Universi
ty of Buffalo Law School in 1890
and received his Bachelor of Laws
degree there in May 1892.
READ LAW IN LOCKPORT
He had begun reading law in
1889 in the office of John E . and
Cuthbert W. Pound in Lockport.
After being admitted to the bar,
he organized the law firm of Hammond,
Hatch and Ackerson in
Buffalo.
He moved to Niagara Falls in
1894 and formed a law partner-
ship with the then City Judge John
O. Chapin. For a time, he also
served as a Justice of the peace
and as a member of the Niagara
Falls Board of Education.
WAS DISTRICT ATTORNEY
Judge Ackerson served as assistant
district attorney of Niagara
County from January 1902 to
January 1908, when be began the
first of three three-year terms as
district attorney.
Judgge Ackerson was a 33d degree
Mason and had advanced
through the orders of both York
and Scottish rites.
His other memberships were Niagara
Falls and New York State
Bar Assn- Niagara Falls and New
York State Historical Societies,
Niagara Falls Lodge of Odd Fellows,
Sons of the American Revolution,
Rotary Club of Niagara
Falls and the First Congregational
Church. He was a Republican.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Elizabeth Vogt: a son,
Charles F. Ackerson of Cayuga.
N. Y., and a daughter, Mrs. Frederick
Handte of Locust Valley, L.I.
The Rev. John Douglas, pastor First
Congregational Church, will conduct
funeral services in the church,
2 o'clock Monday afternoon.
