"Nicholas Van Vranken Franchot, native of Morris, one of the nation's leading oil producers and a prominent figure in state politics for half a century, died Thursday night of last week at Fairview, his house in Olean. He was eighty-seven years of age. A pioneer in the oil industry, which he entered in 1875, Mr. Franchot was president of the Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Producers association in 1907 and 1908 and since 1935 was a member of the board of directors of the American Petroleum institute. He was also chairman of the board of the Exchange National bank, Olean ... Born in Morris August 21, 1855, he was a son of Richard and Hansen Franchot. His father was the first president of the Albany and Susquehanna railroad, now part of the D. & H. system. Following graduation from Union college, Schenectady, in 1875, Mr. Franchot went to Millerstown, Pa., where he worked for a pipe line company. A year later, he began operations as an oil producer at Olean and worked on oil projects in Ohio, Indiana, California and Oklahoma. The D. W. Franchot company, with offices in Tulsa, is still active although his son, Douglas Warner Franchot, who joined his father in Oklahoma, died September 23, 1928 ... He married Annie C. Wood of Warren, Pa., November 5, 1879. She died October 12, 1928. Three daughters and one son survive: Charles Franchot, New York, Mrs. Edgar Munson, Eaglesmere, Pa., Mrs. Frederick A. Godley, New Haven, Conn., and Mrs. Neil McD. Wilder, Goshen ... Burial was in Morris at Hillington cemetery preceded by a service Monday noon in Zion Episcopal church at which the rector, the Rev. L.
