Located in the center of "The first town in the first state," Saint Peter's Episcopal Church has served the community since 1681 when the Churchmen (members of the Church of England) received a grant of four acres in the center of town, which they fenced for a burial ground and eventually a church building site. The first Saint Peter's church was built forward of the present building in the northeast corner of the churchyard. It was built on an east to west axis with the sanctuary at the east end, a custom at the time. This accounts for the odd arrangement of the gravestones with the headstones at the east end of the graves in parts of the cemetery. In the 1950s, it was determined that were no longer any burial sites available in the church yard. At this point, the church established Saint Peter's Pilottown Road Cemetery on the site of the fort built by the original settlers and the Ancient Burial Ground.
