In the early years of the settlement of Jackson, the Catholic inhabitants had no separate cemetery but used the East Side burying ground in common with other citizens. It was near the close of the Civil War when the Catholics of St John's parish resolved to secure a cemetery for their separate use. After a careful examination of various sites, Rev Father Moutard, then pastor of St John's church selected the on on Francis street just south of the city limits and in the summer of 1866 purchased it of Thomas J Kent, paying $100 an acre for 7 ½ acres of land fronting on the east side of Francis street.

The office is currently located at 403 E South St. Phone 517-783-1728.

St John's Cemetery is currently for all denominations.





The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the cemetery is 636719 (Saint Johns Cemetery).
