This study of fatal central nervous system infections in children demonstrates that rabies encephalitis is unrecognised due to lack of typical history and clinical signs.Among 27 children dying of presumed cerebral malaria or meningitis, four (14.8%) proved to have rabies infection at post-mortem. No history of animal contact had been reported. It is well known that rabies is a hidden disease, and surveillance is very poor or non-existent in Africa. Methods to eliminate canine rabies have been developed, but there are no means to implement them. These revealing data will contribute the evidence needed to attract funds to control dog rabies and improve the availability of prophylaxis for humans, especially children.
