This study is the first use of sperm typing to characterize de novo deletions in sperm. The authors focus on the beta-globin gene region, which contains a hotspot for allelic recombination and is prone to ectopic exchange between homologous segments in delta- and beta-globin genes.Their findings suggest that the hotspot for allelic recombination does not drive ectopic exchange in this region.
