According toOGAE Greece, live-on-tape performances that were introduced as part of the backup plans to ensure that Eurovision 2021 would take place will be used once more for next year’s contest in Italy. They report that delegations have been informed of this requirement so they can plan for recordings to be made.

This would mark a change from this year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest where itwas decided not to ask each act to create a live-on-tape performance. In the event that a participant at Junior Eurovision is unable to travel to Paris, the music video of the song will be broadcast. If an act is unable to perform in the live show but has attended rehearsals, the rehearsal will be broadcast.

At the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 only Australia had to use their live-on-tape performancedue to travel restrictions making it impossible for Montaigne to travel to Rotterdam.  During rehearsals for the first semi-final,a member of the Icelandic group Daði og Gagnamagniðtested positive for COVID and so the recording of one of the group’s rehearsals was used in place of them being able to perform during the live show.

What is a live-on-tape performance?

In 2021 all of the 39 acts had to film a backup performance as part of the many contingency measures the EBU has put in place to ensure the song contest can happen in May no matter what.

Each act was able to rehearse for as long as they wish for their live-on-tape performance. However, onlythree attempts over the course of one hour are given for the filming of the performance which is monitored by the EBU. The participating country can choose which of the three performances is to be used. Live-on-tape recordings were not required to be the same as their planned Eurovision performances.

The live-on-tape performances were later shown a week after Eurovision 2021 during theEurovision Song Celebration, as a way to showcase all of the hard work put into creating the extra performances.

Turin will host the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 on May 10, 12 and 14 2022. The host venue of the 2022 contest is PalaOlimpico. The arena was opened in 2005 and has hosted numerous concerts and sporting events, including the ice hockey tournaments during the 2006 Winter Olympics.
