History
Founded in 1962, Enviroenergy are one of the UK’s longest established and biggest district heating companies.
In 1968, the Nottingham Corporation chose incineration as their future method of refuse disposal following a feasibility study by Associated Heat Services. The report highlighted that waste heat from refuse could be used economically, to heat proposed new residential and commercial redevelopments in Nottingham.
In 1995, with the demise of British Coal, the scheme transferred wholly to Nottingham City Council and began trading as Enviroenergy (Nottingham) Limited.
Enviroenergy are recognised as experts on district heating schemes, being founding members of the UK District Energy Association. We were the first District Heating scheme to establish a pre-payment system.

Nottingham City Council Enviroenergy Today
In 2021, Enviroenergy fully integrated into Nottingham City Council once again. Nottingham City Council’s Enviroenergy continues to supply heat and power to domestic and commercial entities across Nottingham via the district heating network. If any surplus is created from the supplying of heat and power to customers, this is directly utilised by the council to provide services to residents, keeping the money in the local community.
The network compromises of 68km of insulated pipework that carries pressurised hot water to its connected buildings. This includes approximately 5000 domestic dwellings, and over 100 commercial premises.
The energy is generated by incinerating 186,000 tonnes of municipal waste at the Eastcroft Depot incinerator. Treating the waste in this way creates a supply of super-heated, high-pressure steam, that is pumped directly into our heat station on London Road.
As a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant, the steam also runs through generating turbines, which produces approximately 60,000MWh of electricity per annum. This electricity is on the network for some commercial customers, alongside the domestic residents at The Atrium building.
