FromMiddle Dutchsien, fromOld Dutchsian, fromFrankish*sehan, fromProto-West Germanic*sehwan, fromProto-Germanic*sehwaną, fromProto-Indo-European*sekʷ-(to see, notice).

Originally a class 5 strong verb, but the Germanic*h was lost from the infinitive and present tense forms throughsyncope in Old Dutch. However, it alternated with*g in the past tense throughGrammatischer Wechsel, and this remained.
