Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. The-b- is most likely epenthetic to avoid the-mr- cluster. Theories that have put forward are:

  1. Akin to Arbëresh(soul).[1][2] CompareRomanianinimă(heart),[3] fromLatinanima(soul), which is the only other Indo-European language to have supplanted the originalProto-Indo-European*ḱḗr ~ *ḱr̥dés. The morphemes involved and the ultimate etymology are not clear. Some proposals have been put forward:
    1. From the verb /(to seize),[1] although this has been doubted.[4]
    2. Has been compared withAncient Greekεὐθηνέω(euthēnéō,to thrive, bloom),[5] itself of unclear origin.[6]
  2. Linked withProto-Germanic*gamaną(companion; fun) to a tentative rootProto-Indo-European*ǵʰem-(to move violently),[7] although this is very dubious.[8]
  3. A connection withAncient Greekῑ̔́μερος(hī́meros,yearning, love)[9] is phonetically unlikely.

Similarity withOttoman Turkishضمیر(zamir, interior part; heart) is coincidental.[1]First attested in 1555.
