Fromwitch +‎-er, a male equivalent ofwitch using the-er suffix as masculine, as inwidower vs.widow, acalque ofPolishwiedźmin. Possibly influenced bywitchery.

The Polish word was coined in 1986 by authorAndrzej Sapkowski as a male equivalent ofwiedźma(witch) for hisThe Witcher book series and media franchise. The English calquewitcher was popularized by the series' English translation.
