Whoa (c. 1843) is a variant ofwoa (c. 1840), itself a variant ofwo (c. 1787), fromwho (c. 1450), ultimately fromMiddle Englishho,hoo(interjection), probably fromOld Norsehó!(interjection, also, a shepherd's call). CompareGermanho,Old Frenchho !(hold!, halt!).
