English
Etymology From the rootvide ofLatin videō ( “ I see ” ) +-o , formed in analogy toaudio .
Pronunciation
Noun video (countable anduncountable ,plural videos or videmus or videoes )
AVHS video casette Television , atelevision show , or amovie .A short film clip, with or withoutaudio (as in amusic video , or one of the plethora of user-generated short movies on sites such asYouTube ).Synonyms: clip ,vid We made avideo montage of Robbie for his fiftieth birthday.
Check out my newvideos on YouTube.
( dated ) Amotion picture stored onVHS or some otherformat .( dated ) VHS .
Usage notes Video is used in contrast withaudio , which is sound only. It is also sometimes used in contrast withfilm to describe all other motion picture formats, such asvideotape anddigital video . The wordsvideo andmovie have some synonymous overlap, but a feature film on the big screen is only amovie inidiomatic use (not avideo ), and web-era user-created videos are usually not calledmovies except in certain contexts. The pluralvidemus is rare and used for humorous effect. It is the first-person plural form of the Latin verb ("we see") in the same way thatvideō is the singular.

Etymology FromProto-Italic *widēō , itself from the root*weyd- ( “ toknow , see ” ) . The term may derive from a Proto-Indo-European stative*wid-éh₁-yeti ( “ tosee ” ) ,[ 1] However, the LIV considers the term to be a more recent innovation.[ 2] The perfect formvīdī may reflect a Proto-Indo-European root aorist*wéydt , although it may also continue the root perfect*wóyde .[ 1]
