    Usage notes

    [edit]
    • Although some authors distinguishtranssexual (pertaining to physicalsex) andtransgender (pertaining togender),transgender is now generally taken to encompasstranssexual and has largely displaced it. Some considertranssexual outdated, although some of those who have undergone or wish to undergoSRS still prefer it, or refuse to call themselvestransgender. Compare the usage notes attransgender. Neither term should be confused withtransvestite (which see for more).[1][2][3]

1943,Formulário Ortográfico de 1943 [Orthographic Form of 1943]‎[2], Rio de Janeiro, PARÔNIMOS E VOCÁBULOS DE GRAFIA DUPLA [PARONYMS AND DOUBLE-SPELLED WORDS.] (section X):

Thes [] in the prefixtrans- is voiced if followed by a vowel []; however, when this prefix is followed by a word starting ins, only one is written, and it is pronounced as if it were double: [] transoceânico;transecular, transubstanciação; etc.
