Etymology

Attested since 1588, borrowed fromSpanishtabaco. The Spanish word could be fromArabicطُبَّاق(ṭubbāq,Dittrichia viscosa) or from a Caribbean language such asKari'na orTaíno or multiple of them, from a word meaning "roll of tobacco leaves"[1] or "a pipe for smoking tobacco," such astabago(tube for inhaling smoke or powdered intoxicating plants).[2]
