Etymology

[edit]

There are two main theories about the origin of this word. Both derived the first syllable fromProto-Baltic*ta-, fromProto-Indo-European*to-, an old pronominal stem, whence alsotas(this). The second syllable is, according to one theory, from the particlega and an extra-d (<da). The same particlega can be found inLithuaniantàgatės(thus, like that) andOld Prussiananga(or), and in reduced form in 17th-centuryarīg (modernarī “too”) and asdz (<*dzi < parallel form*gi) innedz). An alternative theory, however, derives the second syllable intagad fromgads, now “year” but previously also “time”: from an earlier accusative*tagadi(this time) would have come present-daytagad “now.” Cognates includeOld Church Slavonicтогда(togda),тъгда(tŭgda),Russianтогда́(togdá),Ukrainianтогді́(tohdí),тогі́д(tohíd,last year),Bulgarianтога́(togá),Czechtehdy, dialectaltehda(then).[1]
