FromMiddle Englishswappen(to swap), originally meaning "to hurl" or "to strike", the word alludes to striking hands together when making an exchange; probably fromOld English*swappian, a secondary form ofOld Englishswāpan(to swoop). Cognate withGermanschwappen(to slosh, slop).
