FromProto-Philippine*sulit(substitute, replacement), fromProto-Malayo-Polynesian*sulit(difficult, complicated). The close semantic agreement of the Casiguran Dumagat and Hanunóo terms suggests that one focal reference of this term was to replanting a crop that had failed, or had not been fully successful in some way.
