FromProto-Germanic*standaną. The verb occurred in two forms within Germanic, but only this form is attested in Old Norse sources. In the east, this form existed side by side with unattested*stá (from whichSwedishstå), fromProto-Germanic*stāną. Both ultimately derive from the sameProto-Indo-European*steh₂-.
