FromFrenchsociologie, coined byAuguste Comte in 1834, itself a combination ofLatinsocius(companion, fellowship) and the Greek suffixAncient Greek-λογία(-logía), itself fromAncient Greekλόγος(lógos,word, knowledge), fromsocio- +‎-logy.

Previous mentions of the field in English usually referred to it associal physics.[1]
