Latvian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

FromProto-Balto-Slavic*senas, fromProto-Indo-European*sénos(old). In Latvian, apparently only the adverbial formsen was conserved without interruption; in the first Latvian dictionaries, onlyvecs is consistently given as an adjective, whereas the occurrences ofsens are few and dubious. Apparently the Latvian adjectival form ofsen fell out of usage afterProto-Balto-Slavic times, and was recoined and successfully reintroduced only in the 19th century. Cognates includeLithuaniansẽnas(old, ancient),Sudoviansens(old),Old Irishsen,Gothic𐍃𐌹𐌽𐌴𐌹𐌲𐍃(sineigs) (<*sen-ei-),Sanskritसन(sana,old),Ancient Greekἕνος(hénos, old, last year's),Latinsenex(old in age, senior).[1]
