FromSanskritसज्जन(sajjana,gentleman, virtuous man). Compare toJavaneseꦱꦂꦗꦤ(sarjana,scholar) andOld Javanesesajjana(scholar). The change of cluster ⟨rj⟩ from ⟨jj⟩ probably reflecthypercorrection, seeconversion between Sanskrit and Pali forms.
