FromProto-Malayo-Polynesian*ʀibu. First attested in theKedukan Bukit inscription, 683 CE, as Old Malay[script needed](rivu), in the formsarivu (current spellingseribu). Old Cham cognate formsaribu also attested in theĐông Yên Châu inscription of the 4th century.
Also theorized to be late enough to be borrowed fromArabicرِبْوَة(ribwa) which meant “myriad” in reference to a currency.
