From an earlier*pëdyll, borrowed fromLate Latinpadūlem(swamp), from a metathesis ofLatinpalūdem. CompareRomanianpădure, which shows the same change in meaning. Compare alsoItalianpadule, which keeps the Latin sense.[1]
