Etymology

In the senses of “overcrowd (a place)” and “impede (a person)”: fromMiddle French andOld Frenchempestrer(encumber), influenced byEnglishpest. The modern sense is an extension of the sense “infest”. Comparable toEnglish constructionpest +-er(used to form frequentative verbs).
