FromMiddle English*peken,piken,pyken(to peep), probably a fusion ofMiddle Englishpepen(to peep) andkeken,kiken(to keek, look, spy), equivalent to ablend ofpeep +‎keek. Perhaps also possibly ametathetic alteration of Middle Englishkepen,kipen,kypen(to keep, look, observe, watch).
