    According to Nişanyan, fromPersianپای(pây,foot), with the sense ”share” originating from thePersian expression borrowed intoOld Anatolian Turkishبای برابر(pây-berâber,equally, to the same proportion, literallyequal foot). The word is present in its modern sense in XIVth centuryBook of Dede Korkut.The non-Oghuz Turkic cognates, such asKirgiz andYakutпай(pay,share) are, according to Nişanyan, a borrowing from theOttoman Turkishپای, viaRussianпай(paj).However it is more possibly borrowed fromMiddle Chinese(pʰaiH) as early as 7th century and inherited by later Turkic languages.
