Etymology

[edit]

Singularized plural of*nusë, fromProto-Albanian*nutjā, fromProto-Indo-European*(s)nubʰ-tyeh₂, from*snewbʰ-; compareLatinnūbō(to marry a man),Czechsnoubiti(to woo). For the sense development,Greekνύφη(nýfi,bride, daughter-in-law), fromAncient Greekνύμφη(númphē,bride). Alternatively fromProto-Albanian*snutjā, fromProto-Indo-European*snu-eh₂-(daughter-in-law), derivative of*snusós (compareLatinnurus,Sanskritस्नुषा(snuṣā),Ancient Greekνυός(nuós),Old Englishsnoru). Attributed by Vladimir Orel 2000 (:34) toLatinnūptia as a later Latin loan, derived from the first mentioned root.
