In compounds probably means “darkness”,[1] ultimately fromProto-Indo-European*nébʰos(cloud) whence theProto-Germanic*nebulaz, cognates with Old High Germannebul(fog)[1] (New High Germannebel,[1] whenceNebel(fog, mist, haze; nebula)) and Latinnebula(fog; cloud; vapor).[1]
