| Thisetymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at theEtymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Dictionarium Anamitico-Latinum defined Viet. nà asvallis, consistent withĐại Nam quấc âm tự vị which defined it as "vực núi" ("mountain gorge"), however, several dictionaries cited on chunom.net listed it with the meaning along the line of "fluvial sandy bank". Obvious comparanda areProto-Tai*naːᴬ for the meaning "paddy field" in the Muong cognate andProto-Malayo-Polynesian*bena(“lower part of a river; tidal bore”) for the "sandy bank" sense in Vietnamese. The PMP and the Kra-Dai terms are probably related, see Sagart (2019). The ACD list an Acehnese reflex, but does the PMP term have a reflex in Cham? I can't find it in Sakaya & Shine (2016)'s Cham dictionary. It's not very obvious what's going on with these words... Never heard of this word in real life though, where is it used?” |
