FromGermanMasochismus, coined alongsideSadismus in 1886 byRichard von Krafft-Ebing in his bookPsychopathia Sexualis. Named afterLeopold von Sacher-Masoch, whose novel "Venus in Furs" explores a sadomasochistic relationship, +‎-ism.
