FromProto-Nuclear Polynesian *mata-qi-kao lit. 'point of growth' (compare withHawaiianmaiʻao “nail, claw, hoof”)[1] also related toProto-Nuclear Polynesian*mati-kao.[2] See alsomatihao andhao.
