FromMiddle Dutchcoghele, either from or related toMiddle High Germankugele. Cognate withGermanKugel(solid ball, bullet),West Frisiankûgel(bullet). If the word is inherited throughout Continental West Germanic, it requires aProto-West Germanic*kugulā. Further origin uncertain. Possibly related withProto-Germanic*kuggilaz, whenceEnglishcudgel(heavy stick, bat, club).[1]
