Origin unknown, but first attested inMiddle English.

suggested origins and context

Attestations inShakespeare's time seem to suggest it was intended as mildly vulgar (comparezit) and metaphorical; see more atthis Open Literature article, which claimsWelsh as most probable origin:

  • CompareWelshcibi,cibwst(chilblain(s)), although this itself may borrow from Middle English, and we may be dealing with some ancient unknown term. CompareEnglishgyve(schackles), a medieval word that might also take from Celtic.
