From the sameProto-Finno-Ugric*kerä(“round, turning; to turn, twist”) stem askerek,kerít,kerül +-s(obsolete frequentative verb-forming suffix). For the-s suffix, compareolvas(“to read”). Cognates includeFinnishkierä(“twisted”),kiero(“twisted”).^[1]^[2] For the change of meaning, comparekerget(“to chase, pursue”,possibly related) andLatinambīre(“to go round; solicit, strive”) andcircāre(“to go about, traverse, wander”) →Italiancercare(“to look for”).^[3]
