Further origin uncertain; most likely from a derivative ofProto-Indo-European*gʷet-(“swelling, rounding; stomach, gut”), in which case cognate withOld Englishcwiþ(“pregnant”). Also possibly from a derivative ofProto-Indo-European*kuHtís(“skin, hide; pouch, sac”), and in that case related toTocharian Akāc(“skin”).
