FromMiddle Dutchiet, a contraction of earlieriewet, fromOld Dutchiowiht.This Old Dutch compound is formed fromOld Dutchie- 'anything' and a second constituent corresponding toMiddle Dutchwicht 'being, creature', earlier meaning 'thing'. Cognate withLimburgishget,Central Franconianjet,Englishaught.

The suffix-s is taken fromOld Dutchniets whose-s is an old partitive genitive ending.
