From Runic East Norseᛁᛅᚴ(iak) (West Norseek), fromProto-Norseᛖᚲ(ek), fromProto-Germanic*ek, fromProto-Indo-European*eǵh₂óm. The breaking of this word shows that it derives from the Proto-Norse variant formᛖᚴᛡ(ekᴀ), as found for instance on theSöderköping stone (KJ59).
