First recorded in 1629. FromPowhatan ("VirginiaAlgonquian"), though the exact source word is in question: suggestions includeuskatahomen,[1]appuminnéonash (“parched corn”),[2][3] androkohamin(parched, ground corn),[4] the last yielding also the unclippedrockahominy.
