Etymology

Fromhollt(“cleft, fissure, split”) +‎-i, fromMiddle Welshhollt, fromProto-Celtic*skoltā(“cleft, fissure”) (compareIrishscoilt), fromProto-Indo-European*(s)kelH-(“to split, cut”).^[1] Possibly related toProto-Celtic*kallī(“forest, grove”).^[2]^[3]

The original form of the verb washolli, which was then re-formed under the influence ofhollt.
