Fromhollt(cleft, fissure, split) +‎-i, fromMiddle Welshhollt, fromProto-Celtic*skoltā(cleft, fissure) (compareIrishscoilt), fromProto-Indo-European*(s)kelH-(to split, cut).[1] Possibly related toProto-Celtic*kallī(forest, grove).[2][3]

The original form of the verb washolli, which was then re-formed under the influence ofhollt.
