Usage notes

[edit]

The above possessive forms of time units often express the time past: with adurative verb (often in the present-tense), an action or event that has (had, will have) been going onfor a given time until the given moment, or with aninstantaneous verb (in the past tense), an action or event that happened a certain timeago orbefore. For example:

Fél órájavárom a vonatot.Ihave been waiting for the trainfor half an hour.
Fél órájavártam a vonatot.Ihad been waiting for the trainfor half an hour(or: I waited, I was waiting for the train half an hour ago).
Fél órája (= fél órával ezelőtt)érkeztem meg.Iarrived half an hourago.
Fél órája (= fél órával előtte/korábban/azelőtt)érkeztem meg.I(had) arrived half an hourbefore.

Of course, the usual possessive sense is also possible in different types of sentences:

Fél órájavolt még a vizsgáig.Hehad half an hour left until the exam.

(The equivalent French phraseil y a is also constructed with an apparent possessive, although this Hungarian possessive can also correspond todepuis.) See also the entries of the possessive suffixes:-a/-e/-ja/-je for more examples.
