Etymology

[edit]

From earlier*hánn, fromProto-Norse*hānaʀ, of uncertain origin. Perhaps a compound of*he- (corresponding toEnglishhe) and*ānaʀ (fromProto-Germanic*jainaz, corresponding toGothic𐌾𐌰𐌹𐌽𐍃(jains)) or even directly from*ānaʀ withh- added due to influence from the demonstrative pronounhinn, or else perhaps directly inherited from Proto-Indo-European and answering toAncient Greekκεῖνος(keînos).

The long vowel is preserved in the masculine dativehǫ́num and feminine nominativehǫ́n, both affected by u-umlaut (Proto-Norse*hānumʀ,*hānu).
